International Flight of your choice London to Lima

You will be met and driven to the hotel on arrival in Lima Lima

Peru’s Pacific coast capital Lima, also known as the City of King’s, was once the capital of Spain’s colonial empire, something that is still reflected in its faded glory. Visitors to Lima will discover

a mix of art and architecture, world-class gastronomy and Pacific coast views. The city’s food scene has really put Lima in the spotlight in recent years, currently enjoying a gastronomic revolution, it is one of the best places to sample Peruvian cuisine. Most visitors to the city head to Miraflores, Lima’s most affluent district. Miraflores’ clifftop position overlooks the waves

crashing onto the shingle beaches, often full of surfers and provides a great base for exploration. Nearby, the Bohemian district of Barranco is filled with art galleries, beautifully restored mansion houses and boutique shops. Lima’s historic, downtown centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, essential to stop by during a city tour. Here you’ll find some of Lima’s most historic buildings and an excellent selection of museums.

Lima – Arequipa (LA 2111 11:45 – 13:15)

You will be met and driven to the hotel.

Arequipa

Arequipa, also known as ‘La Cuidad Blanca’ or the white city, sits at an altitude of just under 2,400 metres and is one of Peru’s most attractive cities. Fine colonial buildings, picturesque plazas and a skyline dominated by three volcanoes: El Misti, Chachani and Pichu Picchu are its main draw. The historic centre is one of the country’s most charming; the fine architecture seen is grafted out of the local white volcanic sillar rock and has stood the test of time and what Mother Earth has thrown at it over the centuries. It has a number of attractions including an impressive colonnaded main square and the Santa Catalina Monastery, one of Peru’s most important religious monuments. A visit to the beautifully restored convent of Santa Catalina, built in 1579 and now open to the public after 400 years of seclusion, is a real highlight. Equally fascinating is its museum which houses the mummy of Juanita, a young girl sacrificed in an lncan ceremony and perfectly preserved over the centuries by ice high up in the Andes before she was discovered and brought to Arequipa.

Arequipa City Tour with Santa Catalina Convent & Juanita Mummy

The UNESCO World Heritage listed city centre of Arequipa is one of Peru’s most beautiful. Dressed in baroque buildings intricately carved from the local white volcanic stone, the city thus has the name “La Ciudad Blanca” (White City). The city’s centrepiece is its cathedral with the El Misti volcano looming behind it. Starting in the main square marvel at the city’s most distinguished buildings. For the best views of the city and its spectacular 3 volcanoes, visit the city’s most famous vantage point before embarking upon a tour of the Santa Catalina Monastery. Founded in 1579; its cloisters, picturesque streets and plazas remain much the same as they were centuries ago. Learn about the lives of the group of nuns that live within the convent and discover what feels like another city within the city. Last stop is at the small Santuarios Andinos Museum, where hopefully you’ll catch a glimpse of Juanita, an Inca adolescent sacrificed to the mountain gods and buried in the ice for nearly 500 years.

Please note we cannot guarantee Juanita will be on display as certain times of the year she is

temporarily removed and replaced with another Mummy.

AREQUIPA – COLCA CANYON

Day 1 AQP to Puna 2D/1N (Private)

Today depart Arequipa across the altiplano to the Colca Canyon. Pass by some Peru’s most spectacular scenery of towering mountains, volcanoes as well as past rolling plains dotted with vicunas and guanacos, even spot the odd flamingo! Stop at the village of Pulpera to visit to the Mollepunku Caves as well as Callalli to observe the volcanic rock formations that look somewhat like a medieval castle. After lunch, continue on your way to the Collagua towns of Sibayo and Tuti. The Collagua is an ethnic group and one of the original settlers in the valley. In the afternoon, arrive to Chivay, the main small town in the Colca Valley. You are then transferred to your hotel.

Colca Canyon

Colca Canyon is the deepest canyon in the Americas and twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. The landscape here is breathtaking and the area is home to vicunas, llamas and the majestic condor. Travel either from Arequipa or Puno through the fertile landscape of the Colca Valley, stopping at traditional villages surrounded by pre-Inca agricultural terraces, some of which are still in use today. There are some very comfortable lodges within the Colca Canyon, many with spectacular views over the valley and terraces below. In the early morning, visit the “Cruz del Condor” (Condor Viewpoint) overlooking the steep canyon below to witness majestic condors soaring above on the thermal currents. Then relax in hot springs, take hikes or horse-rides or alternatively, simply just enjoy the peace and tranquility in this high Andean landscape.

Day 2 AQP to Puna 2D/1N (Private)

After breakfast, visit the Colca Valley where your first stop is the Cruz del Condor lookout point, which affords the best views of the canyon, one of the 7 deepest in the world. If the weather permits, you might even see the majestic flight of the Andean condor. On the way back, stop at the traditional village of Maca, known for its colonial churches and typical needlework, before returning to Chivay for lunch. Continue on to the city of Puno, taking in the dramatic changes of the Altiplano. In the late afternoon arrive to Puno, sat on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

Lunch is included today.

Lake Titicaca (Peru)

At an altitude of 3800m and straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia, Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world. Said to be the birthplace of the Incas and the birthplace of the sun, it’s electric blue waters are a spectacular sight against the bright sky and snow-capped Andean mountains. The Uros floating reed islands, Taquile and Amantanf are some of the many islands on the lake; home to some of Peru’s oldest cultures and where traditional ways of life still predominate. Visit small villages around the lake, the archaeological site of Sillustani and stay in a comfortable lodge sitting right on the lake shore.

Lake Titicaca – Uros & Taquile

The trip today begins early as you head out of Puno towards Taquile Island, about 35 kilometres away and 3950 metres above sea level. The culture on the island dates back to pre-lncan times and the islanders still live according to the traditions and beliefs of their ancestors, and are world renowned for their colourful outfits and incredible textiles. Explore Taquile Island’s rich textile tradition, declared a part of UNESCO’s Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, Taquile’s textiles are emblematic of the local living culture. As the island enjoys a privileged microclimate, you’ll likely see men weaving wonderful textile pieces outdoors.

Next, while still on the island, you will visit the community of Huayllano, who’s residents will show you their artistic, handicraft, and farming activities. Enjoy a traditional lunch before setting sail over to the famous Uros Islands, a set of man-made floating islands in the middle of the Lake Titicaca National Reserve. The Uro-Aymara are a proud culture where men are skilled reed raftsmen and women expert textile weavers. Calling themselves kot-suna, “people of the lake,” the Uro-Aymara were once forced to relocate to Lake Titicaca where they found refuge on manmade Totora reed islands, on which they still live, and practice a traditional life descendants of the first altiplano inhabitant hunters and gatherers. Lunch is included today.

You will be met and taken to the train station.

Lake Titicaca (Peru) – Cuzco, Rail Journey

Its two dining cars, in the style of the Pullman cars of the 1920s, serve gourmet meals. Enjoy live shows of traditional music and dances, snacks throughout the day, a 3-course gourmet lunch and afternoon tea shortly before arrival. Highlights along the way are Urcos; where according to legend, is the place where the local chieftains hid the lnca’s gold to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Spanish conquerors, and La Raya; the highest point on the journey at 4,321m asl. As the journey continues, pass by seemingly never ending pastures and remote villages lost to the passage of time. Total journey time is approximately 10 hours 30 minutes.

The Sacred Valley is home to some very impressive and sizeable historical sites, colourful markets and picturesque villages. The glistening salt terraces at Maras, where salt has been harvested since the Incas makes for an interesting visit, as does the circular agricultural terracing of Moray and the Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo. The archaeological compound found here is a remarkable spectacle and a site of great historical significance. Its incomparable setting hundreds of feet above the Urubamba River, deep in the Andes and its well preserved Inca stone structures make it a must see highlight of any itinerary to Peru. Reached by a 20 minute motor boat from Puerto Maldonado, on arrival, watch brightly coloured birds flying through the tree tops, spot tropical plants and insects and gather first hand insight into this fascinating ecosystem. Offering simple yet stylish accommodation, its screened cabanas and high thatched roofs allow guests to wake to the sights, sounds and scents of the jungle and experience the wild right from the porch. There are 8 rooms within the main lodge and 7 stilted cabanas nearby, all beautifully appointed, all feature mosquito nets, hot water, ceiling fan and either two twin beds or a king. The main lodge features the restaurant, bar and dining room. During your stay, guests can choose from an array of activities such as trekking to wildlife rich lakes, discovering the jungle under the cover of darkness, canoeing and bird watching. Wildlife sometimes spotted in the area are blue and yellow macaws, monkeys, agoutis, sloths, caiman, tapir and giant river otters.

Please note that there is no phone reception at the Amazon lodges, and no Wi-Fi signal due to the remote location, whilst there may also be power limitations at certain times of day.
