The latest addition to Sanctuary Retreats brand will open in Namibia in April following extensive refurbishment
Incorporating just seven individual suites and a two-bedroom family suite, Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is located in Namibia’s far north-west, surrounded by the wilderness of Kaokoland.
Externally, the lodge blends into a landscape of endless desert featuring rocky outcrops, sand dunes and mountain ranges.
Inside, each suite has been designed as a retreat from the harsh environment, with furniture in calming tones and curved white plaster shower screens.
The family suite has two ensuite bedrooms, a private terrace and an open lounge. There’s a shaded patio and daybed on the private veranda from which guests can see giraffes wandering down the valley and, in another direction, shifting sand dunes up to 300 metres high.
Social spaces at Okahirongo Elephant Lodge incorporate an infinity pool and an open-sided main lounge, where curios and inspiring literature are displayed beside an open fire.
The lodge’s dining room has been redesigned in umber tones, complemented with distressed wooden furnishings and giant rattan lampshades.
ELEPHANT TRACKING
Guests can take personalised game drives with expert Himba guides to track desert elephants, lions, giraffes, and plentiful antelope and bird species.
There are also geological sites to discover, including the towering clay castles of the Hoarusib river valley. Thousands of years old and hundreds of metres high, these natural wonders are so isolated Okahirongo Elephant Lodge guests may find themselves the only visitors.
They may also spot the mysterious man-made Lone Men of Kaokoland on scenic drives – almost life-size figures, sculpted from boulders and wire.
